Intravenous Sedation Pre-Operative Instructions to Patient

The technique of Intravenous Sedation is designed to relax you during dental procedures, but during which communication is maintained such that you will respond to simple instructions throughout the period of sedation.

Sedation will not be given if you arrive without an escort.

On the day of treatment

Please bring a responsible adult with you, who is able to wait and escort you home, and arrange for someone to stay at home with you for the remainder of the day after treatment.

Avoid eating a heavy meal prior to the appointment. A light meal (i.e tea and toast) is acceptable together with small non alcoholic drinks approxiamtely 2 hours prior to the appointment.

Take only routine medicines at the usual time, and bring them with you (including inhalers).

Please wear flat-heeled shoes, and loose clothing that does not constrict breathing or the ability to roll up your sleeves.

Do not drink any alcohol within 24 hours of your appointment.

After treatment: until the following day

Travel home with your escort by car.

Stay resting quietly at home for the remainder of the day.

You must not drive or go out on the road.

Do not use equipment which may harm you (e.g kettle, cookers, power tools, irons, knives etc).

Do not sign important legal or business documents.

Do not drink any alcohol within 24 hours after your sedation treatment.

Do not make yourself inaccessible to your escort. (e.g by locking the bathroom door).
