What is a scale and polish?

A scale and polish is a simple dental cleaning. First, the dentist or hygienist removes the hard, sticky stuff (plaque and tartar) from your teeth using special tools. Then, they polish your teeth to make them smooth and shiny, helping them look and feel clean.

Why would I need a scale and polish?

A scale and polish helps keep our teeth and gums healthy. It removes the germs and build-up that brushing can miss, which helps prevent problems like gum disease, cavities, and bad breath. It also makes your teeth look brighter.

You should get a scale and polish every 6 months, but it can vary. Some people might need it every 3-4 months if they have gum problems or a lot of plaque.

Does a scale and polish hurt?

A scale and polish usually doesn’t hurt, but you might feel a bit of discomfort, especially if you have sensitive teeth or gums. If you’re worried about pain, let your dentist or hygienist know — they can be extra gentle or use numbing gel.

Procedure

Sometimes after a scale and polish teeth can be sensitive. This is normal and reversible.
