How much is an emergency dentist?

Emergency dentist visits are necessary in most cases, but some patients may put them off because of the cost.

What you’ll pay for an emergency diagnosis and treatment is greatly dependent on when and where you visit.

Today, we’ll talk through what a dental emergency is and how much you can expect to pay if you have to make an emergency appointment.

What classes as a dental emergency?

Here at Scott Arms Dental Practice, we class a dental emergency as:

  • Toothache
  • A chipped tooth
  • A knocked-out tooth
  • A partially dislodged tooth
  • Something stuck between your teeth
  • A filling that’s fallen out
  • A crown that’s fallen out
  • Broken braces wire
  • Loose brackets or bands on braces
  • Abscesses
  • Bleeding as a result of injury in the mouth

Some of these emergencies – like toothache and abscesses – are commonly the result of an underlying issue that has developed and worsened over time. Chips, breaks, and broken braces, however, can happen after a knock or eating something very hard or chewy.

How are dental emergencies priced?

The cost of a dental emergency appointment depends on the treatment and diagnosis methods.

For example, a filling may be more expensive than a crown which needs re-gluing.

It also depends on the practice you visit, and whether you choose a private or NHS practice. Private dental appointments are useful in that you’ll be seen much quicker and have time to discuss your concerns in full, but they’re often much more expensive.

At Scott Arms Dental Practice, our prices are similar evenif you book a late night appointment or on a bank holiday. Our emergency dentists are available until 11pm each evening 365 days per year and our phonelines are 24 hours.

NHS vs Private Practices

NHS emergency dentists

For the majority of emergency dental appointments on the NHS, there is a starting price for treatment. This depends on your age, whether you receive free NHS treatment, and whether or not you receive benefits such as Income Support and Jobseeker’s Allowance.

The NHS gives out contracts for emergency appointments in the local area so you may find that appointment availability is limited.

Private dental emergencies

Treatments at private dental practices may be more expensive than NHS treatments, including those for dental emergencies.

Take a look at our prices to see how we charge for dental emergencies here at Scott Arms Dental Practice.

When patients attend emergency visits, extensive treatment is sometimes not required to relieve the pain or problem immediately and a simple option will always be offered first where appropriate. For example,  root canal treatment which can be a complex and costly procedure, usually at an emergency appointment we can do a temporary treatment first if this is something you require.

How to prevent a dental emergency

Dental emergencies like knocks to the face and some sporting incidents are often hard to avoid, but there are a few ways to protect your teeth and reduce the likelihood you’ll experience one of the problems mentioned above.

These include:

Maintaining an oral hygiene routine

Keeping your teeth and gums in good condition helps to keep your mouth healthy, preventing cavities, gum disease, and other dental health issues.

Diet

Avoid a diet rich in sugar, as it breaks down the enamel on the teeth, making the teeth weaker and more prone to chips, breaks, and cavities.

Regular check-ups

Visiting your dentist regularly means any early signs of more serious issues can be spotted and treated accordingly.
